But can you have differences and still live in peace? Can you prevent “war” in your relationship? Of course! 1. Understand that conflict is part of any relationship.

Every couple has disagreements and arguments. According to author Debbie Mandel of Addicted to Stress, how you handle these fights can predict the outcome of your relationship. If you come out of an argument ready to make love, you can consider that fight as just a hitch. If you’re feeling more resentment, anger, and bitterness, however, you might have deeper things to resolve with your partner.

2. Identify the patterns and try to break them.

What’s your demeanor in an argument? How do you fight with your partner? Here are some signs that you’re not handling arguments well; are these familiar to you?

  • Criticizing your partner and becoming verbally abusive
  • Expressing your contempt and disregard
  • Becoming defensive
  • Shutting down and closing off your feelings
  • Playing the victim card
  • Bringing back past issues
  • Becoming dominant

Admittedly, it’s not going to be easy to correct these patterns quickly. If you’re in a heated argument, sometimes your emotions get the best of you. When you’re too angry or frustrated, your emotions can eat you up. Try these tricks, however, to prevent blowing the argument (and your relationship) down the hole.

  1. Bite your tongue if you feel you’re about to blurt out a criticism. Counting 1 to 10 is an effective anger management tactic for any tense situation.
  2. Learn how to listen to your partner and acknowledge his or her feelings. This takes maturity and owning up to your own faults as well.
  3. Evaluate why you’re annoyed with your partner. Discover what you really want to achieve if you raise an issue with him or her. When an argument rises, avoid attacking as this will only make your partner defensive.
  4. Drop the pride and be open to communicating. You’re mad, and that’s understandable, but you will still be in the same place you were before the argument unless you talk it over with your partner.
  5. Embrace the art of compromise. Focus on coming up with solutions instead of each other’s faults.
  6. Stop digging up past issues just to drive a point. You’re only going to send the argument off course. Focus on what’s bothering you at present and fix that.
  7. Take a moment to introspect and figure out why you’re trying to control the argument. Dominance means you want to make the decisions alone but that’s not going to be healthy for the relationship. Again, your goal should be to make love, not war.

3. Establish some rules of engagement.

If you’re serious about fixing conflicts, then agree to some grounds when you argue. When you have better days, sit down and talk about these ground rules. For instance, agree to eliminate yelling, mocking, intimidation, and hostility in a fight. Of course, remember that physical violence is never OK.

4. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

You will agree that this is not the first time you’ve read that quote! Relationship experts keep emphasizing this because the reality is living in harmony with someone can be frustrating. So many couples forget to let go of the small stuff and end up in much bigger problems than they anticipated. Realize that no relationship is perfect. Importantly, no partner is perfect. If you let their little quirks and habits drive you crazy, your relationship will lose the spark it once had. Instead of sweating the small stuff, focus on your partner’s positive traits and remember the reason why you’re in this relationship together!

5. Stop figuring out who’s right.

An argument is not a contest. You have fights because you have differences, not because one is right and the other is wrong. If you approach a fight to establish that your way is the correct opinion or behavior, you might not resolve anything.

6. Lower your expectations of each other.

This is not about lowering your standards in the relationship. It’s about setting expectations that won’t leave you disappointed or frustrated. If the idea is to make love and not war, it makes sense that a couple should understand their boundaries. You should never assume your partner should know what you want or that he/she gets your point about an issue that’s bugging you. If you openly and humbly communicate with your partner about the issue, you might be surprised to find out that you weren’t on the same page.

7. Aim for harmony, always.

Your goal is to live in peace with your partner, so strive to make a positive environment where you stay connected and still “into” each other. Begin by embracing positive thoughts about your relationship. Think about what makes you grateful for being with your partner. Channel those positive thoughts into actions, too.

10 Avocado Nutrition Facts (Most People Don’t Know About)

Avocados are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. In fact, they are so packed with nutrients that they’re labeled as a “superfood.” (Can you picture an avocado donning a red cape?)

Despite the numerous health benefits of an avocado, the fruit still has its fair share of detractors. The main reason for this is its high fat content. Indeed, an avocado contains a lot of fat – healthy fat, which the body needs to survive. For clarification, there are two types of fat – unsaturated and saturated – otherwise known as “healthy” and “unhealthy” fat, respectively. (So, there’s a bonus nutritional fact, just for you!)

Let’s talk about ten other nutrition facts about the avocado that you may not know!

1. Avocados are unlike any other fruit.

Have you ever eaten an avocado? Does it smell or taste like fruit to you? No, it doesn’t. It’s kind of a weird fruit, actually.

Most fruits are loaded with natural sugars and carbohydrates; avocados are very low in both. While the main draw of most fruits is their sweet and juicy taste, avocados are creamy with almost no hint of sweetness. Beyond this, an avocado has nutritional value unlike any other fruit out there, which we’ll talk about a bit more.

2. Avocados may bolster weight loss.

In a study published in Nutrition Journal, researchers found that adding about 1/2 of a fresh Hass avocado increased feelings of fullness (“satiety”) in both overweight and obese participants – over a 3-to-5-hour period! In other words, just half of an avocado was enough to “hold over” the appetites of those who might otherwise snack between meals. Goodbye, cravings!

3. The avocado safeguards your eyes.

Containing what are called phytochemicals, avocados provide an effective and potent antioxidant. These antioxidants, spread throughout the eye tissue, can protect the eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light. Additionally, because of their potent nutrient-absorption properties, avocados may also reduce the risk of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in individuals over 55 years of age.

4. Avocado aids nutrient absorption.

We must consume adequate nutrients, but we must also be able to absorb those nutrients. Fat-soluble nutrients must be combined with fats – ideally, healthy fats – to be properly utilized by the body. As avocados contain high concentrations of healthy, monosaturated fats, they complement other nutritious foods perfectly. Besides absorbing nutrients, avocado also helps absorb and utilize antioxidants!

Multiple studies show that avocado decreases the risk of heart disease, which is the most common cause of death worldwide. Some risk factors for cardiovascular disease include high cholesterol, inflammation, and elevated blood triglycerides. In an analysis of eight studies, researchers found that avocado:

  • Increases “good” (HDL) cholesterol and decreases “bad” (LDL) cholesterol.

6. Avocados are high in fiber.

Besides improving digestion, fiber also supports the body in many other ways. It stabilizes blood sugar, promotes healthy gut bacteria, and lowers cholesterol levels. Per the USDA nutritional database, a small Hass avocado contains 10 grams of dietary fiber! Incredible!

7. Avocados have more potassium than bananas.

This one may be the most surprising. Not only do avocados outpunch a banana in potassium content, but they also outpunch darn near every other food, period. According to USDA databases, ½ of an avocado contains 487 milligrams (mg) of potassium. One cup of pureed avocado includes a whopping 1,116 mg of potassium!

8. Avocados span the nutritional spectrum.

You might be surprised by the sheer number of nutrients in an avocado. It contains 20 different minerals and vitamins. Just 3.5 ounces of avocado includes the following nutrients (and their recommended daily allowance, or RDA):

  • Vitamin K (26%)
  • Folate (20%)
  • Vitamin C (17%)
  • Potassium (14%)
  • Vitamin B5 (14%)
  • Vitamin B6 (13%)

9. Avocados may fight arthritis.

Avocado contains substances called saponins, which are linked to the improvement of arthritis and osteoporosis symptoms. You find saponins in other plant foods, including soy. Researchers are currently studying the potentially enormous benefits of avocado extract on these and similar conditions.

10. Avocados are a legit brain food.

Dr. Daniel Amen, renowned neuroscientist and author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, cites avocados as one of the healthiest brain foods in existence. One reason is the fruit’s high concentrations of vitamin K, which is known to neutralize free radicals and inflammation. Numerous studies have shown that vitamin K may reverse the early stage symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. In this respect, avocados may provide a neuroprotective benefit!
